A Great Quinoa Recipe

Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a small grain that grows in countries like Peru, Bolivia and Equador. The grain is very small and needs to be washed to remove the bitter outer coating before you cook it. One of the great things about Quinoa is the fact that it is regarded as one of the most nutrient rich foods you can eat. It is not only loaded with protein, but many other essential nutrients as well. Anyhow, not that I have introduced Quinoa it is time to demonstrate a simple recipe for making breakfast cereal with it.

First, (as mentioned above) make sure you wash the bitter coating off of it before you cook it unless you can find some where it is already removed. Here are the steps to cooking it and then making a delicious and nutritious breakfast cereal.

1. Soak 1 cup of quinoa in a pot of water for 15 minutes to remove the bitter coating. When done, remove from the water and strain.

2. Place the quinoa back into the pot and add 1 and 1/2 cups of water and cook until it boils (add 1/2 teaspoon salt if desired).

3. Once it comes to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer covered for 15 minutes.

4. Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 3 teaspoons of honey to taste, and optional nuts and raisins.

5. Remove from the heat and allow to sit for 5 minutes covered.

6. Stir again and serve.

That along with any other breakfast items such as juice and toast you would like to add makes for one tasty and highly nutritious breakfast.
