Tomato sauce is arguably the most popular of all the different types of pasta sauces. You can purchase a can or a pack of it from the grocery store or you can simply make one yourself by sauteing onions and garlic in olive oil before you include oregano, pepper, salt, basil, and tomatoes or tomato paste. Tomato sauce is invented by Francisco Leonardi, an Italian chef, back in 1790.

Bolognese was invented in the Bologna region of Italy and it is also called Ragu. Bolognese sauce is pretty much similar to tomato sauce, except that milks, meat, carrots, and celery are added to the preparation. You can also include nutmeg, thyme, and basil as seasonings.

Pesto sauce is a sauce made of ground fresh basil leaves, garlic cloves, pine nuts, olive oil, and Parmesan cheese combined together. Make sure that you are using fresh basil leaves and not the dried ones. Pesto sauce originates from the ancient Rome and it means "grounded" in Italian.

The last and certainly not the least kind from this list of different types of Pasta Sauce is the Alfredo Sauce. It is named such because it is named after its inventor, Alfredo di Lello, back in 1920s Rome. Butter, cream, Parmesan cheese, and garlic are the main components of an Alfredo, although you can also use nutmeg as a seasoning.
